They gathered in the Peace Gardens behind the town hall to remember the thousands who die each year because of work-related incidents and disease.

The shoes of some of those workers were placed on the ground at the foot of the city's Messenger of Peace sculpture, wreaths of purple and white flowers were laid and the names of those recently killed - including detective Stephen Oake - were read out.
