...Candid, down-to-earth, intimate and revealing, the images present the film icon and iconoclast completely unvarnished from the gloss of celebrity.

"Steve McQueen was admired for his ruggedness, his 'cool,' his individuality," says SFAE co-founder/director Theron Kabrich.

"What immediately jumps out at me about Barbara's stunning photographs of him is the sense of finding him fully in his element.

In seeing Steve with the things he cherished, the vintage motorcycles, collectible toys, airplanes, trucks and other old, worn and well loved objects, it's clear he was naturally drawn to things that exuded an authenticity comparable to his own.

It's fascinating to see such a famous persona portrayed in a private context, one so organic to who he really was." The approximately forty color images comprising the show at SFAE are culled from about 400 that Barbara McQueen shot during the time she spent with her late husband, among them ones set in locales including Trancas Beach in Malibu, the airfields in Santa Paula, Ketchum, Idaho and on the road.

Previously unpublished and unshown, many of the photos have never been seen outside of McQueen's family and friends, as Barbara has waited until now to share them with the public through an exhibition and book project she sees as a tribute to Steve.

They will be available for sale in limited editions of fifty signed & numbered 16" x 20" prints.

The photos are also featured in the just-released book "Steve McQueen: ...

Solicitors demand equality for asbestos compensation

...In England and Wales the level of compensation is set at £10,000 by law and is only payable to the spouse but yet just a few miles over the border in Scotland payments up to £30,000 have been made to bereaved widows.

Thompsons wants to see a change in the way payments are assessed so families across the UK receive compensation in line with the amount currently paid to families in Scotland.

Thompsons head of asbestos policy, Ian McFall said: “The law must be changed to ensure families in England and Wales are entitled to the same level of compensation for bereavement as the equivalent family in Scotland.

Any imbalance is unjust and cannot continue.” In England and Wales the amount of compensation paid to bereaved spouses is set at just £10,000 by the Fatal Accidents Act 1976.

However, in Scotland the level of bereavement payments is decided by the courts, which look at each individual case on its merits.

Compensation can also be paid to children, siblings, grandchildren, parents and common law partners.

In some fatal personal injury cases Scottish juries have decided that compensation for bereavement of up to £50,000 should be paid to widows.

Recently the Scottish Parliament changed the law to make it easier for families to claim for compensation for The change was made following a campaign supported by Frank Maguire, solicitor advocate at Thompsons Scotland.

Karmanos Researchers Identify Pathway for Treatment of Malignant ...

...Karmanos scientists presented their research at the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting in Los Angeles, CA.

"We are getting closer and closer to making an impact on this insidious disease," said Anil Wali, Ph.D., an associate professor with Karmanos who led a group of cross-collaborative researchers in studying the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic (UPP) pathway regulatory proteins.

Their study demonstrated that protein ubiquitination and degradation are critical players in the spread of After studying 241 genes involved in the UPP pathway, Wali's group determined 33 genes were differentially expressed among epithelioid and biphasic histotypes.

"We have already reported earlier detection biomarkers that can be utilized in assessing the high risk groups of patients," Dr.

Wali said.

"Now, if we can develop a therapy to target this pathway, we will be one step closer to halting this disease." Malignant pleural Despite advances in cancer treatment, the average survival rate remains low and the majority of patients die within two years of diagnosis.

Currently there is no cure.
