Davitt McAteer, who headed the federal mine safety agency during the Clinton administration and says mine asbestos regulations should have been strengthened long ago."We have a regulatory system in this country that with regard to safety and health is broken," said McAteer, who blamed rule-making delays on cumbersome, multilayered review requirements.

The only other Iron Range facility that showed an elevated level in tests was Northshore's Babbitt mine in 2003.

Ten subsequent samplings in Babbitt were below the proposed safety threshold, the federal data show.Regulators currently can't use the threat of fines to force companies to reduce asbestos levels below the new standard.

That isn't about to change anytime soon.

Two surgeries and an invasive form of chemotherapy haven't stopped the disease from spreading.

They also donated airline miles, hotel points and close to $1,000 in spending money.

Their constant support, however, is what means the most.

“That has really kept my spirits high and been instrumental with this dreaded disease,” Lawrence said.

It's the most difficult match-up of Lawrence’s life.

But he's optimistic he will win it.

“My attitude has always been I’ve always had this confidence in myself that someone's got to be the first to kick it,” he said.

That’s one prediction everyone hopes will come true.

Lawrence’s second is that it will be Florida and Georgetown Monday night, with the Gators taking it all.
